SUBJECT: Support for the Approval of Next Generation Technology High School

Dear Chancellor Kamar Samuels, Members of the Panel for Educational Policy, CEC Members and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams,

I am writing to express my strong support for the approval and opening of Next Generation Technology High School.
New York City students deserve a public school that prepares them not only to use technology, but to understand how it works, question its impact, and build with it responsibly.
What makes Next Generation Technology High School so compelling is that it is not an “AI school” in the narrow or superficial sense. It is a rigorous academic model grounded in advanced mathematics, coding, computer science, ethical reasoning, and real-world problem solving built in partnership with Carnegie Mellon. In a time when technology is reshaping education, work, and civic life, students need deeper preparation than surface-level familiarity with digital tools. They need the opportunity to become thoughtful builders, informed decision-makers, and responsible civic leaders.

This proposal reflects the kind of forward-thinking public education New York City should be proud to lead. The school’s emphasis on ethics, governance, bias, and public responsibility is especially important. Our students should not be passive consumers of powerful technological systems. They should be prepared to evaluate them critically, shape them responsibly, and participate meaningfully in the future of this work. As a citywide public school option, Next Generation Technology High School would expand access to an innovative and intellectually serious educational pathway for students across the five boroughs.

I respectfully urge you to approve Next Generation Technology High School and support its opening. This is an important opportunity for New York City to invest in rigorous, future-facing public education that meets the moment with both ambition and responsibility.

Sincerely,
